International Aluminium-Pressure Die Casting Competition 2010

The Association for the Aluminium Recycling Industry (VAR) and the Organisation of European Aluminium Refiners and Remelters (OEA) have joined forces to organise a competition for aluminium pressure die casting. They were supported by the Verband Deutscher Druckgießereien (Association of German Pressure Die Casting Works) and the Expert Committee for Pressure Die Casting of the Bundesverband der Deutschen Gießereiindustrie (BDG) (Associationa of German Foundrymen). This competition wants to show the high quality of aluminium pressure die casting to the public.

The evaluation and selection of the castings was conducted by a highly qualified panel of judges from research and practice. Due to the high quality and the variety of the entered castings, the entries were divided into two product categories: “Structural parts” and “Multifunctional near-net shape castings”. For every category two first prizes and one second prize were awarded. The main criteria for judging the entries were both casting quality and the suitability of the construction for pressure die casting. Another important factor was the extent to which the use of the casting promotes the application of recycled aluminium. The presentation of the awarded entries took place on the occasion of the EUROGUSS (19 – 21 January 2010) in Nuremberg.

Laureates category: “Structural parts”

Laureates category: “Multifunctional near-net shape castings”

10th OEA International Aluminium Recycling Congress –
Positive Impacts for the Recycling of Aluminium

The impact of new powertrain technologies in the automobile on the demand of aluminium casting alloys and the aggravation of the general conditions for the European aluminium recycling industry in the international competition were the main topics of the 10th International Aluminium Recycling Congress on 2 and 3 March 2009 in Berlin. Numerous delegates from 19 countries discussed with high quality experts of industry, trade, associations and the European Parliament and took the opportunity to exchange views on the possibilities to cope with the global economic crisis, with colleagues, suppliers and customers.

The plans of the EU commission to include the secondary smelters into the emission trade as of the year 2013, were regarded as a major threat of aluminium recycling in the European Union.

The international character of aluminium recycling was emphasised by presentations on the current status of aluminium recycling in Russia, China and India. Presentations on melting techniques, a new technology to recover aluminium metal from aluminium alloys, the recycling of aluminium from aircrafts, an aluminium recycling project by Jaguar, the raw material potential on packaging and the concerns about attempts to define the sustainability of aluminium by the recycled metal content, showed the high significance and the variety of aluminium recycling in Europe and the world.

The
documentation of the congress is now available and can be ordered from the OEA as CD-ROM.
